Water Wells in India

In many rural parts of India, families must walk long distances each day just to collect water, often from sources that are unsafe or unreliable. For families living in poor and low-caste communities, access to nearby water is not always guaranteed, making a basic necessity difficult to obtain.

Through this ministry, Sanctuary Ministries helps provide clean water wells in villages where safe water is scarce. A well does more than meet a physical need — it brings relief to families, strengthens communities, and opens doors to share the message of Christ.

A single well can transform daily life for an entire village.

Families in poor communities often rely on shared wells for daily water.

For many households, collecting water becomes a daily burden carried primarily by women and children. Hours spent walking for water mean less time for school, work, and family life, while contaminated sources often lead to sickness that keeps communities trapped in cycles of hardship.

Sanctuary Ministries provides clean water wells in poor villages as an expression of Christian service. Wells are often drilled near local church communities, where water is freely shared with everyone. Meeting a daily physical need creates natural opportunities for relationships, conversations, and the sharing of Christ’s love and His message of salvation within the village.

Providing clean water changes more than health — it transforms daily life for entire villages and opens doors to introduce God's word.

A Well Changed Everything

Most of us never think about where our water comes from. We turn on a faucet in our homes and expect clean water to be available at any moment. In poor villages in India, daily life looks very different.

In one slum community we are helping, people walked long distances each day to collect drinkable water. A direct route to a water source existed, but residents from the slum were not allowed to pass through a nearby neighborhood, simply because of their caste. The higher-caste neighborhood wouldn't allow the people of the slum even to walk through their village. So instead of a mile-long walk, the people of the slum were forced to travel nearly twice the distance just to bring water home.

Sanctuary Ministries drilled a well within the community, placing clean water close to the people who needed it most. The water is freely available to everyone and quickly became a daily gathering place for the village. By meeting a basic physical need, God opened up new opportunities for relationships with the people of this village. We now work within this slum community, providing food and education for the children. In time, God used these relationships to establish a church there as well, and many from the slum now worship together.

This is the difference a single well can make — physically and spiritually.

Why We Provide Water Wells

Sanctuary Ministries provides water wells because access to clean water meets an immediate physical need while also strengthening gospel ministry already taking place in these communities. When clean water becomes available, daily burdens are lifted and new opportunities for relationships and ministry naturally follow.

When a well is drilled, the impact reaches throughout the entire village:

  • Families no longer walk miles each day carrying heavy water containers.

  • Women and children are freed from hours of daily water collection.

  • Villagers gain access to clean water that reduces sickness and hardship.

  • Low-caste communities receive water freely, regardless of social barriers.

  • Wells placed near local churches create natural gathering places.

  • Conversations begin that allow local preachers to share Christ’s message.

  • Relationships grow naturally through meeting a real physical need.

  • Existing churches are strengthened as trust grows within the community.

Sanctuary Ministries works with local churches and leaders to place wells where the need is greatest and where water can be freely shared with everyone.

Currently, the cost to drill a well typically ranges from $1,500–$1,600, depending on location and depth.

You Can Help Provide Clean Water

Every water well that is installed makes it possible for families and villages to access clean water close to home. Your support helps provide clean water in communities where it is still difficult to obtain, while also strengthening opportunities to share God’s love and His message.

Gifts of any size help move us closer to drilling the next well and bringing clean water to another village.

Sharing the Love of Christ Through Many Ministries

Through the ministries of Sanctuary Ministries, we work among some of the poorest people in southeast India, many of whom come from the lowest levels of the caste system. Each of our ministries meets practical needs while also opening opportunities to introduce people to the message of the Gospel and to the hope found only through Christ.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."    -- James 1:27
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
-- Matthew 28:19
